Fiberglass Matting is one of the preferred forms of structural reinforcement for non-structure applications. It is inexpensive, easily handled, and can readily build enough thickness in a part, mold, or other piece to support its weight. However, Fiberglass is not immune to damage from abrasion or impact. This article will focus on repairing damage done to Fiberglass Matting caused by abrasion or impact.
Abrasion is the sudden breaking or tearing of molecules or particles. When this happens to Fiberglass Matting, it is called a fiberglass crack. The breaking occurs near the inner surface of the mat. The breaking occurs when the fiberglass strands are bent or twisted and come into contact with another, straight strand. This causes the outer layers of the matting to swell due to moisture. The sudden increase in the size of the holes makes the strand bulge outwards, creating an obvious seam break.
Seam breakage of fiberglass mats can be caused by a lack of Feed Cycle lubrication, a cracked feed-way or an excess of pressure in the casting process. Feed Cycle is the process used to force the molten resin into the molds. When the resin is forced in, it is expanded outward, which forces the seams to move. This causes the bulges observed in broken fibers. For the above reason, we recommend fitting an epoxy resin kit to your molds before pouring in the molten wax or oil.
Impact is another possible cause of fiberglass mats and cracks. When there is a sudden force that punctures the fibers, the ends may tear and then pull away from each other, leaving gaps behind. If the force is particularly strong, the fibers can rip right through the top of the mat. The good news is that fiberglass fibers can be pulled apart without ripping.
Fiberglass mixtures can also be easily damaged during transportation. If you have to ship a fiberglass mat, you should use a good quality shipping service, as well as a packing tape to protect it during transport. You should use a pressure washer when dealing with stubborn stains. If the solution is not effective, try using a commercial cleaning detergent and a soft brush to scrub the fibers. Do not use abrasive cleaners on the fiberglass mat as they may permanently dull the metal.
It is also important to keep the fiberglass mat in good condition. Regular care will ensure it lasts a long time. Keep it off the ground, where it will not get knocked or trampled. Apply a coating of fiberglass resin regularly to extend its life. If you are looking for easy repairs, then you may opt to buy a ready to assemble kit that comes with all you need, including the instructions. However, if you need repairs or do-it-yourself projects, then it would be better to go for fiberglass cloth or other repairing options.
