If you are looking at purchasing a fiberglass swimming pool liner, then it would be wise to look at a fiberglass mat to go with it. You may be thinking that the only reason that a fiberglass mat is being considered, other than saving money, is because it is an open cell design. This type of design will save you money because it does not require the use of a liner or the reinforcement of soft plastic, which can cost a fortune. The open cell design also helps the foam expand and contract, which means less stress on your back and less likelihood of pain from a cracked or chipped concrete slab
The reason why you want a fiberglass mat is because it is much more rigid and durable than the hardener option. A hardener is simply a plastic resin that comes in two flavors, siliconized or calcium carbonate. The hardener option costs more, but you are going to get more out of it as well. The plastic resin hardeners are toxic and it is possible to get sick from exposure to the resin.
With a fiberglass mat, you get a much more rigid design with solid fiberglass strands woven right on the surface of the mat. Each fiber has a small hole or blow-out, which allows the water to drain into the mat. Each strand then snaps together, forming a strong foundation that will keep the water where it needs to be without the possibility of breaking or splintering.
Fiberglass tanks are also commonly used for above ground swimming pools. These tanks are much less expensive to produce and they have some excellent physical properties. The primary reason why they are so good is because they have high tensile strength. This means that the tanks will stand up to extreme temperatures and it will not break or split apart no matter what kind of conditions it experiences. It is also denser than the hardener tanks, which means that the water will form into large bubbles when the bubble bath is sprayed with a jet of water from a garden hose.
Plastic tanks are popular in saltwater tanks. Because they don't require any type of outside pressurization, they are great for use in hot and tropical climates. However, most plastic tanks will split or break apart when they come into contact with salt water. If you are using fiberglass for your saltwater tanks, the chances of this happening are slim to none. In addition, if you buy the carbon fiber tanks instead, then you will not have to worry about this problem at all.
Both of these materials can provide excellent shock absorption and heat insulation. Fiberglass is often more resistant to impact damage than plastic and it is much stronger. Even though they are both made out of the same primary material (glass fiber), the physical properties between the two vary slightly. If you are looking for an affordable solution for above ground pool liners, then fiberglass is often a better option.
